Over the past several months, the Plant Based Foods Institute (PBFI) interviewed more than 20 stakeholder groups across the Midwest plant protein value chain: farmers, processors, ingredient companies, food manufacturers, researchers, commodity organizations, food hubs, market development organizations, and institutional foodservice partners. We asked what is working, where barriers persist, and what it would take to ensure more Midwest-grown plant proteins enter commercial markets. This brief summarizes what we heard in our first round of listening. It offers a qualitative snapshot and foundational shared starting point for the Plant Protein Alliance’s agenda to put into action through our work.
The newly released 2025 Regional Retail Insights report, produced by the Plant Based Foods Institute (PBFI) in partnership with our sister organization the Plant Based Foods Association, explores plant-based food sales across the four U.S. census regions. Understanding regional variation in how shoppers engage with plant-based foods reveals promising opportunities for food companies and retailers to lean into sustained consumer interest in expanded choices. Plant-based foods offer variety and versatility to Americans looking for options that meet their nutritional needs and lifestyle preferences alike.
